Corey and Tanner met through a mutual friend after she took a summer mission trip to Utah. They knew each other for a few months before Corey decided to join a Spring Break trip to Utah that Tanner was helping to organize. As the trip approached, they started getting closer as friends. On the flight to Utah for this short mission trip, they managed to sit next to each other and had several hours to get acquainted. During the flight, they began to fall in love. Unfortunately, their connecting flight from Long Beach, California, had to turn around due to a snowstorm in Salt Lake City, so they landed back in California and had to wait until the weather cleared to take off again. This situation unexpectedly gave them an additional seven hours to share their stories, laugh together, and realize that they should have been connecting like this months earlier. Their first actual date occurred after Spring Break. They initially planned to get coffee, but both drove home for the last two days of the break after the trip. When they returned to campus, they decided to go out for ice cream together that night instead of waiting for their coffee date. At the ice cream shop, Corey asked the drive-thru attendant for their go-to order and decided to try the recommendation. While they were enjoying their ice cream, Corey accidentally spilled his cup all over his car. He had to go back inside to get napkins and wipes to clean up the mess. They ended up losing track of time, spending several more hours talking in the parking lot. They mistakenly read a clock in the car that had been set back an hour due to daylight saving time that week in Utah.
When it came time for Corey to propose, Tanner was attending a conference for her internship with the South Carolina Baptist Convention for the weekend. Since it had been a few weekends since they had spent quality time together, they planned to explore Daniel Island when she returned on Sunday afternoon. Daniel Island is one of her favorite places to walk, and Corey had never been there. While Tanner was at the conference, Corey and some friends went to scout out a location for the proposal. They spent the afternoon on Daniel Island, and Corey pretended that he had never seen it before. As they took a long walk, they eventually arrived at the spot he had chosen for the proposal.
When asked what they love about each other, Corey adores Tanner's genuine love for people. This quality initially drew him to her. He remembers hearing her give a talk about the core beliefs of the largest religious group in Utah, the Latter-Day Saints, in preparation for their mission trip to share the gospel with them. Tanner's passion for reaching those who have never heard the story of the true Jesus is inspiring. During her talk, she became emotional as she shared her heart, showcasing her deep care for others. Corey finds her heart for people incredibly encouraging. She is also one of the funniest individuals he has ever met. Tanner loves to laugh and takes joy in what makes others laugh, effortlessly playing into that. Corey admires how Tanner listens intently and speaks thoughtfully; her words are meaningful because she is careful in how she uses them. She maintains her composure and responds with emotional depth. All these aspects of her are interconnected. To sum it up, he loves how she loves people and listens with intent and speaks wisely because she genuinely cares. On the other hand, Tanner loves how Corey is one of the best lovers of people she knows! He is patient, kind, and gentle. He consistently brings a smile to her face and listens attentively in every conversation. Tanner appreciates his intentionality with everyone he meets. Together, you can find them enjoying walks, visiting new coffee shops, traveling, paddleboarding, and hiking. Congratulations on your engagement! Your MBL family is thrilled to celebrate your love!
